Breakthroughs in autism managementThe following slide presentations entitled "Breakthroughs in autism management" were presented during the Step Ahead professional development program at Al Ain Juniors School, UAE on December 18, 2011.
Materials and topics discussed in the seminar/workshop were inspired and informed by the just concluded Autism Around the World Conference 2011 at Zayed University Dubai, organized by the Child Early Intervention Medical Center.Breakthroughs in autism management part 1

The morning session started with a brief introduction on autism. It is followed by a comprehensive discussion on sensory processing disorder and vision rehabilitation therapy (taken in the conference by Dr. Stephen Shore and Dr. Jeffery Becker, respectively). Thereafter, technologies used in autism diagnosis and therapy were introduced (primarily based on the talk by Dr. Melissa Olive). Session was concluded by a reflection on special educators' role in moulding children with autism into functional and beneficial members of the society.

Breakthroughs in autism management part 2

Afternoon workshop starts with an interactive session on autism and exercise, based on the presentation of David Geslak, founder of Exercise Connection. It was succeeded by a review of behavioural modes of autism management with a special focus on joint attention training. Finally, biomedical issues and gut brain connection were discussed (taken from the conference discussion by Dr. William Shaw and Dr. Bariah Dardari).

A Reflection on Professionalism

What does it mean by a stable professionalism? What distinguishes a person who is professionally stable to someone who is not? In this slide, I reflected what traits set this distinction.

Professional stability

Classroom management

A typical challenge to teachers is managing student behaviour in the class. We'll look at different methods presently found to be evidently effective in managing classroom behaviours.

Child Talk: the secret language of children

Children have a unique and special way of perceiving the world the same way adults do. In this presentation, we are going to review how developmental psychologists conceive the secret language of children.

Learning Style Differentiation in the Classroom

Differentiation is more than an approach. It is an attitude...a philosophy...a belief system, which opines that learners are special and unique in their own ways. It is a conviction that individually different as we are, we all posses talents, skills and capacities that if only tapped through effective means will surely allow us to maximize our own potentials.

In this presentation, I went through the actual process of differentiating learning styles in the classroom starting from setting the instructional objectives to actual lesson planning to actual teaching then to assessment.

Through this, we are supposed to gain insight about the essential elements of differentiation and the commitments required of us as teachers so that we'll benefit from the affordances brought about by this approach
