the cookie-napper

(Photo from conversationalmarketinglabs.com)

Say for example, there is a beautiful cookie jar in a room. The jar is filled with delicious cookies that no man can resist.

By chance, I passed by the room and saw the cookie jar. Out of curiosity I came in, peeped at what's inside and was enticed by the nice smell of cookies such that I was tempted to take one and go. Unknowingly, someone, who we are going to call Mr. X, saw me take the cookies. For a number of days, I repeatedly took cookies from the cookie jar. Mr. X have seen me in all these occasions. He's the only witness, I would say.

One day, I did not happen to pass by the room. I did not see the cookie jar. I did not take a single cookie. Mr. X also happened to be not in the room.

Unfortunately, the cookie jar was gone and the owner began to trace who took the cookie jar.

If the cookie jar owner pushes through his/her search for the cookie-napper, who do you think will be blamed?

Why?
